Custom Keyboards Mutation Tiers
How mutations stack on keycaps for step money and 4-player trades, without invented names or odds.
Mutations are the twist layer on Custom Keyboards. The official description tells you to get rare mutations and become rich. It does not publish a named mutation dex or a percent chance. This page ranks effects you can observe — more money per step, a look traders recognize, a stack with Kick Power — and refuses to invent creature names or 0.01% labels.
Read this beside keycap tiers and the Tier List Hub. A mutation does not replace Kick Power. It multiplies (or merely paints) a cap you already rolled. If you cannot roll decent caps yet, buy keyboards using keyboard tiers before you hunt mutants.
How to identify a mutation without a fan list
When a cap looks different, check three HUD facts:
- Does step money change after you place it, compared with a blank cap of the same rarity band?
- Does the inventory tag add a second label besides rarity?
- Do other players in the 4-player server ask for that look in the safe zone?
If money changes, the mutation is economic. If only the look changes, it is cosmetic unless demand says otherwise. If neither money nor demand moves, it is a collection badge. Rank with that, not with a rumor spreadsheet.
S through F for mutations
S — Economic mutants on already good caps, plus any look that consistently draws trade offers. Keep, lock, and do not auto-sell. Duplicate S mutants are trading currency.
A — Clear step-money bump on A or B caps. Fill the board with these. They are the reason offline earnings jump after a lucky session.
B — Cosmetic mutants with mild demand. Keep one for screenshots and trades. Sell extras if slots are tight.
C — Visual-only on filler rarity. Fun, not payroll. Sell when you need space unless a Boba quest cites the look.
D — Unknown tags you cannot test. Place, step, record the number. Until then, do not trade them away for F clutter, and do not pay S prices for them.
F — Fake mutations. Particles from a shop pack that do not persist, or “mutant” names copied from Paint My Keyboard. If it is not on your Custom Keyboards cap after a relog, it was never a mutation.
Stacking rules you can actually use
- Mutation on a high-earning cap beats mutation on an F cap. Mutate (or keep mutants of) workers, not clutter.
- Two mediocre mutants are usually worse than one S cap and one empty slot that you are about to fill. Empty slots still matter for best setups.
- Kick Power does not replace a mutation, but it feeds more rolls that might mutate. Spend on Kick Power when the board is already full of A workers.
- Equip-best may ignore mutations if it sorts by rarity tag. Always compare step money by hand after an equip-best press.
- Auto-sell is how mutants die. Lock first. See auto farm.
Because odds are unpublished, the honest way to “farm mutations” is the same as farming rares: more kicks, better Kick Power, event boxes, and trades. How to get rare keycaps covers that loop. Do not buy a spin-wheel story about a guaranteed mutant.
Trading mutants on small servers
Four players means demand is local. An S look on your screen is B if nobody in this server wants it. Hop if you are shopping; stay if you are selling a known ask. Use the safe zone, screenshot, and the how to trade checklist. Never accept “add a mutant for free” as a tax.
Value stacks: rarity band + mutation + current demand. Keycap value is the worksheet. Do not use numeric charts from other keyboard tycoons. Their mutation families are different even when the thumbnails look similar.
Events, codes, and mutations
BOBA and like-goal codes might grant boxes. Open them, then test step money. A code name is not a mutation name. Group rewards from Kick a Keyboard might do the same. Rank the result, do not rank the source. If an update adds a new tag, watch changelog and rerun the three HUD checks instead of copying the first thumbnail you see.
Mutations are how Custom Keyboards turns a full board into a rich board. Treat them as observed modifiers, lock anything that pays or sells, and let Kick Power create more chances. Anything beyond that — named dexes, percent tables, clone-game secrets — is noise this tier list will keep deleting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Codes, Kick Power, trading, and Boba answers in one place.
What is the best mutation?
The one that raises step money the most on a cap you already want to keep, or the look traders in your server will pay for. No public named best exists.
Do mutations have published drop rates?
No. Ignore percent GUIs. Farm with Kick Power, events, and trades as described in rare keycaps.
Should I mutate filler caps?
Prefer mutants on workers. A mutation on F clutter is still usually vendor food unless demand is real.
Will equip-best keep my mutants?
Not always. It may sort by rarity. Compare earnings after you press it, and lock pieces before auto sell.
Are mutations tradable?
If the cap is tradable, the mutation goes with it. Use trading and value the stack, not the blank rarity.
